New 3DS XL won't update?

So, I was hoping to download Final Fantasy Explorers today for my N3DSXL, but it seems as though there's a system update I need to complete before I can connect to the eShop. Every time I try to download the update, my system connects to the internet, and consistently responds with:
"An error has occurred. Unable to update. The system will now be restarted."
No error code or anything. How do I get this resolved?
Answer(s):
go into you Internet Settings and Connection Settings, swipe right and hit DNS settings. Enter 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 for 1st and 2nd. This will point it towards googles DNS servers
Before trying anything else would reboot your 3DS and router/modem
